Greetings All,

Here are some activities if you feel like getting out and about in July:

Sunday 10th July – 12pm -2ish
Allan Watkins the Warden at Cannon Hill will be leading a history walk
starting from the tearooms at Cannon Hill park.

Friday 15th July
Sarehole Mill workday – Can you volunteer a couple of hours of your time
to help tidy up the area behind Sarehole Mill? Meet at 10.30am on the car
park of the Mill, Cole Bank Road.

Sunday 17th July
Hall Green Mela – 12-5pm Sarehole Recreation Ground. Family fun – music,
entertainment, children’s activities, stalls and food.

Saturday 23rd July
Balsam Bash – The Dingles 1pm-3pm
Meet at the Coleside Avenue entrance to the site (off Brook Lane , Hall
Green). An oportunity to take your tension out on this invasive plant;
himalayan balsam. Cut it/pull it up and stamp on it – most satisfying
destructiveness!

Sunday 31st July
Balsam attack at Greet Mill Meadows 10am- 1pm
Meet at the ford at Green Road, Hall Green and get your tension out on
that plant again! Successive attacks are really working on this site to
erradicate this invasive plant but we have to catch it before it seeds.

Update: Keep your eyes peeled for the ‘Brum Reapers’ in the Hall Green
area. If you spot a gang of folks with scythes, it is not the apocalypse;
but the volunteers from SEAT (Sarehole Environmental Acton Team) who were
awarded funding to buy scythes and a days training in their use and
maintenance. They are helping to help maintain the meadows in the area in
a more environmentally friendly way while getting some Tai chi like
excercise at the same time. Yesterday evening a mowing session was held at
Greet Mill Meadows and there will be further sessions throughout the
summer so look out for them on your travels (and don’t be afraid!)

£23 million boost for Brum schools

Birmingham schools are set to get an extra £23 million from the Lib Dem ‘pupil premium’ to be introduced next autumn.

It will be added to the existing school funding formula and will amount to £430 for each pupil who is on free school meals or is in Council care.

Councillor Tanveer Choudhry said “This is welcome news. It will help to deliver real improvements to local education. Heads and Governors now know what they will get and need to be planning how they will spend it.

“Schools must spend the money supporting pupils who need the help. It can be spent on more teaching assistants, teacher training, learning mentors, family support, homework clubs and sport. This is a clear new resource for schools to be targeted at pupils from disadvantaged homes.”

The Yes To AV Campaign is holding an event on the 4th February at which Lorely Burt, Liberal Democrat MP for Solihull, is speaking at. It’s a free event on political reform.

The event will be hosted by BBC Talkshow host, Adrian Goldberg. Other speakers include Jack Dromey MP, Labour MP for Erdington, Jonathan Bartley, Director of Ekklesia and Dominic Fisher, Chairman – Ladywood Conservatives.

Join us for a Hearty Lib Dem Curry on 19th January

I hope you can join me and my colleagues for a relaxed get-together in one of Birmingham’s much-loved curry houses where you’ll be able to connect with other Lib Dems and find our what’s going on in the party in our area.

Punjab Paradise at 7:30pm on Wednesday 19th January 2011.

The evening will be relaxed and enjoyable – the ideal opportunity to get back in touch with the party or meet people who are involved if you’re new to the area. All are most welcome: members and non-members, supporters or people who are simply interested in local politics.

A new deal for a new constituency

The Birmingham Hall Green constituency has been modified to include the Hall Green, Moseley and Kings Heath, Sparkbrook, and Springfield wards. The 2010 General Election can bring the new leadership that our area needs.

Parliamentary candidate Jerry Evans is a long-time Hall Green resident and has a deep understanding for the challenges facing local people.

Following Labour’s recession, the constituency unfortunately has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. Shockingly, youth unemployment has surpassed 25% in some parts. This downward spiral must be brought to an end.

Jerry will fight against the shutting down of any local businesses, and is determined to improve young residents’ employment prospects by vastly increasing the number of local apprenticeships.

At this difficult economic time, we must reward those working hard to make ends meet by reducing their taxes. Under Liberal Democrat plans, workers earning under 10,000 pounds will pay NO income tax. This will be paid for by stopping millionaire tax dodgers, and asking multi-million pound mansion owners to contribute a little more.

Under Jerry’s leadership as an MP, local post offices, swimming pools and hospitals will also be protected. As councillor, he managed to help a local businessmen open a new post office on the Stratford Road just in time for Christmas; local residents were thrilled, and one described the opening as a ‘miracle’. More of the same can be expected if Jerry is elected MP in 2010.

Lib Dems launch 6 to fix in Birmingham Hall Green

Next year voters in Birmingham will go to the polls for both a local and general election.

At a local level, Lib Dems on Birmingham City Council have a long record of getting things done. In the last four years more has been done to tackle crime, keep our streets clean and provide better services than ever before, all thanks to the Lib Dems.

Now, local Lib Dem campaigners want to know what your priorities are for our area. That’s why they’ve launched the ‘six to fix’ survey, to be delivered to every house in our area. The survey asks you which one of their 6 priorities is most important to you, and by returning the survey (which is free!) you can make sure your voice is heard.

Your local Liberal Democrats in Birmingham are continuing to push the City Council to do more to help the environment, with a series of new plans backed by Lib Dem campaigners.

Birmingham has been chosen to lead a pilot project to get more people driving low-carbon cars, and has also expanded its City centre combined heat and power scheme. The scheme, developed with Lib Dem support, will see several areas of the city getting cheaper and greener energy.

Birmingham’s Lib Dems have also supported the recent Friends of the Earth Climate Change rally in London. The event, called The Wave, which was designed to highlight the risks of climate change, saw 50,000 people come together across the country to march in The Wave, the biggest ever climate change march in the UK.

The Liberal Democrats were out in force throughout the UK. In London, speeches from Nick Clegg, Simon Hughes and Susan Kramer roused the crowds before the march set off.

“Green issues matter to us all” said local campaigner Jerry Evans “and it’s the Lib Dems, both here in Birmingham and nationally, who are getting real action for the environment.”
